Reel de Pointe au Pic

A signature tune of French Canadian fiddler Jos Bouchard, this version of “Pointe-au-Pic” is slightly crooked, lacking a beat at the end of the 2nd A part. The variation provided at the bottom here shows one way to fill up the short measure to make the tune “square” (i.e., 64 beats). To hear a squared-up rendition of this tune, check out the videoclip posted below, from a jam session featuring Jay Ungar and Molly Mason & friends. Rumor has it that “Pointe-au-Pic” was originally a schottische called “Four Little Blackberries,” recorded in 1916 by Scottish accordionist Pamby Dick.
