Silver Bells & Snow Deer

Silver Bells & Snow Deer: Doug got these from the repertoire of Maine fiddler Lucien Mathieu. They are both vintage tunes taken from songs. The music for Silver Bells was composed by Percy Wenrich, with lyrics by Edward Madden (pub. 1910). Snow Deer's melody, according to Peter Yarensky (www.nhcountrydance.com/music/fiddle-tunes_tunes.html), is from another song from the early-1900s “when there was a craze for American Indian songs,” and it quickly entered the fiddling tradition, becoming popular both throughout this country and in Canada. It's frequently paired with Silver Bells, as well as Redwing “and other such tunes.”
