Evit Gabriel was written by Daniel Thonon, a Belgium-born (1949) musician, composer & instrument builder who emigrated to Quebec as a teen. He plays a variety of instruments, primarily diatonic accordion and hurdy-gurdy. He describes this tune as a “Larideau” - a mix between a laridé (a common folk dance from Brittany) and a rondeau – and says that he wrote it while in the hospital waiting room awaiting the birth of his youngest son, Gabriel. He says “The Breton title means 'dedicated to Gabriel' but, in French, also means 'faster, Gabriel.' ”
