French Sing-Along on Deck at Schooner Estates on Friday
Schooner Estates will host a sing-along of favorite Franco-American songs from 3 to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 15, to which the public is invited free of charge.
Serving as song leader will be Aliette Couturier, inducted earlier this year into Maine's Franco-American Hall of Fame in recognition of her dedication to keeping the French music traditions alive in the local community. Assisting with the event will be several of her colleagues from the monthly Franco song sessions which are held at USM's Lewiston-Auburn College under the auspices of USM LAC's Franco-American Collection.
Mark Prevost, resident services director at Schooner, points out that while the facility's many Franco-American residents are eagerly looking forward to this special event, there will be song booklets provided so that anyone can follow along with the lyrics regardless of their ability to speak French. “The more voices we have,” he says, “the merrier it will be – or, as we say in French, un bontemps pour tous la monde!”
The sing-along was organized by the Maine Folque Co-op, a local group devoted to preserving and promoting the state's unique ethnic arts traditions. The event will take place in the Village Green, located in Castine House, Schooner's main building. Schooner Estates is located at 200 Stetson Road in Auburn, off from Center Street/Rte.4 just north of the Auburn Mall. More information is available by calling Schooner at 784-2900.
Helping to lead the upcoming Franco sing-along at Schooner Estates will be, pictured left to right, Irene Mercier, Mary Leclerc, Jeannine Doucette, Aliette Couturier, Helene Sylvain and, at the piano, Jeannette Gregoire.
