“Island of Woods” (or Oileán na gCoillte) is a modern masterpiece of traditional Irish music, composed in the late 1980s by the renowned fiddler and composer Liz Carroll. Though it is a contemporary piece, it captures the ancient, soulful essence of a classic Irish air.
The Story Behind the Tune
Liz Carroll composed this piece for her 1988 album, Lost in the Loop. The title “Island of Woods” is a poetic translation of an old name for Ireland, referring to a time when the country was covered in vast, ancient forests.
The melody is deeply atmospheric, designed to evoke a sense of landscape, history, and a touch of melancholy. It was famously popularized further when it was recorded by the group Cherish the Ladies, becoming a staple for instrumentalists who want to showcase emotive, lyrical playing.
Musical Characteristics
-
Tempo & Feel: It is a slow air, often played with great freedom and “rubato” (speeding up and slowing down for emotional effect).
-
Key: Usually played in E Minor, a key that lends itself perfectly to the “lonely” or “haunting” sound often found in traditional Gaelic laments.
-
Phrasing: The tune features long, sweeping melodic lines that require excellent breath control (for whistles/flutes) or smooth, sustained bowing (for fiddles).
