“Le Tourment” (The Torment) is a popular French-Canadian jig composed in 1975 by the late Quebecois musician Jean-Paul Loyer. Despite the heavy-sounding name, the tune is a bright and driving 6/8 jig that has become a staple in the Quebecois and New England contradance scenes. It is traditionally played in the Key of G Major and is often paired with other jigs for a high-energy set. Its syncopated phrases and rhythmic “lift” make it a particular favorite for fiddle and mandolin players.
