Notes

“Star of Munster” is a classic Irish reel and a favorite in sessions from Clare to Portland. Known for its atmospheric A-Dorian melody and its high-flying “B” part, it is a tune that rewards both precision and rhythmic “swing.” Whether played with the smooth, rolling ornaments of the Sligo style or the driving pulse of a modern jam, it remains one of the most exciting and enduring pieces in the traditional Irish canon.

“Star of Munster” is a quintessential Irish reel, widely regarded as a “test piece” for musicians due to its relentless energy and the dexterity required for its soaring second part.

The Story Behind the Tune

“Star of Munster” is a traditional Irish reel that dates back at least to the 19th century. It famously appeared in Francis O’Neill’s landmark collection, The Music of Ireland (1903), and has been a cornerstone of the repertoire ever since.

While it is an “anonymous” traditional tune, it was immortalized in the modern era by fiddlers like Kevin Burke and Martin Hayes. Interestingly, while it is almost always played in A Minor, Kevin Burke famously recorded a “darker,” driving version in G Minor on his 1978 album If the Cap Fits, which remains a favorite for those looking for a more “old-timey” or sonorous feel.

Musical Characteristics

  • Key & Mode: Most commonly played in A Dorian (a minor-sounding mode with a sharp 6th/F#). This gives it a sophisticated, slightly moody character that stands out in a set of major-key reels.

  • The “Torrent of Notes”: The tune is famous for its steady stream of eighth notes. In the “A” part, the melody stays relatively low and rhythmic, but the “B” part features dramatic reaches up to a high B note on the E-string, providing a brilliant, exciting climax to the phrase.

  • Versatility: Because of its scale-like structure, it is remarkably flexible. It is often paired with other minor-key reels like “The Otter’s Holt” or shifted into major-key sets to provide a moment of tension and release.
