Tune Description: “Joys of Quebec”
“Joys of Quebec” (originally titled “Les Joies de QuĂ©bec”) is perhaps the most iconic French-Canadian tune in the traditional repertoire. While its origins are deeply rooted in the Quebecois fiddle tradition, it was popularized across North America by the legendary Don Messer, becoming a staple of “Down East” fiddling right here in the Northeast.
The tune is a bright, happy reel played in the Key of A Major. It is famous for its “crooked” feel and its distinctive rhythmic “lift,” which makes it impossible to sit still while listening. In a session, it is often used as a “caller’s favorite” for contra dances because of its clear phrasing and infectious energy. For mandolin and fiddle players, it offers a wonderful opportunity to practice clean string crossings and the classic “Quebecois swing.”
