Notes

“The Maid Behind the Bar” (also commonly known as The Barmaid) is one of the most widely played and instantly recognizable reels in the Irish traditional music repertoire. It is an quintessential “session” tune, often being one of the first reels learned by students of Irish fiddle, flute, and tin whistle.

Set in the key of D Major, the tune is celebrated for its bright, happy character and its extremely satisfying melodic flow.

  • The A-part: Features a series of climbing and falling notes that feel very balanced and stable.

  • The B-part: Offers a slightly more energetic contrast, with a repetitive and rhythmic quality that makes it a favorite for dancers.

Because it is so common in the Irish tradition, it has also migrated into the French Canadian and Old-Time repertoires, where you may occasionally hear it played with different regional accents. It is a perfect example of a “straight” reel that relies on a steady, driving pulse to really come alive.
