Notes
“Lanigan’s Ball” is a spirited traditional Irish jig that has been a staple of sessions and dances for generations. While many know it as a lively 6/8 instrumental, it is also famous as a “story song” that recounts the chaotic and humorous events of a party thrown by one Jeremy Lanigan.
Musically, the tune is most commonly played in E minor (often leaning into the Dorian mode). It features a driving, rhythmic A-part with a persistent, circling melody that builds tension, followed by a B-part that opens up into a slightly more expansive feel. Its rhythmic structure makes it an excellent tune for stepping, and it is frequently paired with other jigs like The Tenpenny Bit or Indian Point to create a high-energy set. Its enduring popularity stems from its perfect balance of a slightly dark, minor-key mood with an unstoppable, danceable pulse.
