Notes
“Inisheer” (or Inis OĂrr) is a hauntingly beautiful modern air that has quickly become a beloved standard in the Celtic tradition. While it sounds like it could be centuries old, it was actually composed in the 1970s by the Irish accordion player Thomas Walsh after a trip to the smallest of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.
A Musical Postcard
The tune is designed to capture the serene, isolated beauty of the island of Inisheer. It is a “slow air,” meant to be played with a great deal of “soul” and space between the notes.
-
The Vibe: It evokes the feeling of standing on a limestone cliff looking out at the Atlantic Ocean. It is peaceful, slightly mournful, and deeply evocative.
-
The Structure: Usually played in G Major, the melody relies on long, sustained notes that allow instruments like the mandolin or fiddle to use tremolo or vibrato to great effect.
-
Versatility: Because of its simple yet powerful melodic line, it is a favorite for weddings, memorials, and quiet solo practice. It transitions beautifully from a delicate whistle solo to a rich, tremolo-heavy mandolin piece.
