Notes
“The Silver Spear” is one of the most universally recognized, frequently played, and beloved reels in all of Irish traditional music. Serving as a true cornerstone of the session repertoire, it is a tune that every traditional musician learns early on, yet it never loses its freshness or appeal. Its bright, open architecture and infectious rhythmic lift make it the ultimate icebreaker for an instrumental circle, frequently used to kick off a set of reels or inject instant warmth into a crowded room.
Musically, the tune is set in the crisp, resonant key of D major (featuring its classic two sharps: F# and C#). It is celebrated for its incredibly elegant, symmetrical construction, which flows effortlessly across the strings with a natural, rolling momentum.

The A-Part centers around a bright, cascading four-note pattern that centers beautifully around the low D string. It provides a solid, grounding rhythm that feels steady and comforting, locking immediately into the pulse of the room.
-
The B-Part provides a glorious contrast by leaping up into the higher register. It features a soaring, lifting phrase that answers the lower notes of the first section, building a wonderful sense of collective energy before descending gracefully back into the driving home cadence.
For a group of players, “The Silver Spear” is pure satisfaction. On the fiddle, the melody lies perfectly under the hand, allowing for smooth, fluid bowing patterns, crisp triplets, and rhythmic cuts that accentuate the dance-like lilt of the reel. On the mandolin, the tune’s linear, scalar nature makes it an excellent showcase for smooth, alternating down-up picking, where the instrument’s natural ring adds a bright, chiming clarity to the melody.
Because it is so friendly and accommodating to other tunes, “The Silver Spear” is almost always paired in a medley—most famously leading directly into other D major or G major classics like The Maid Behind the Bar or The Merry Blacksmith. It is a brilliant example of the enduring power of traditional music: simple enough to be shared by players of all levels, yet deep and joyful enough to anchor a lively kitchen party or pub session until the early hours of the morning.
