Notes
“Le Reel du Carnaval” (The Carnival Reel) is a classic of the Québécois fiddle repertoire, embodying the festive and high-energy spirit of the winter carnivals that are a cornerstone of French Canadian culture. While the exact origins are often debated in the traditional way, it was famously recorded by the legendary fiddler Jos Bouchard, who played a pivotal role in popularizing the “Montmagny style” of fiddling.
The tune is a quintessential reel in G major, characterized by its infectious, syncopated rhythm and a melody that seems to “bounce” with each measure. In a traditional setting, it is almost always accompanied by podorythmie (seated foot-tapping), which provides the driving, percussive heartbeat essential to the genre. Its bright and celebratory nature makes it a popular choice for both social dances and casual kitchen sessions, often serving as a highlight of a musical set.
With its blend of technical agility and unbridled joy, “Le Reel du Carnaval” remains a vibrant symbol of the enduring heritage of French Canadian folk music.
