Notes
Niel Gow’s Lament for the Death of his Second Wife is widely considered one of the most beautiful and poignant compositions in the Scottish fiddle tradition. Composed in 1806, it serves as a deeply personal tribute from the legendary fiddler Niel Gow to his wife, Margaret Urquhart, following her passing.
A Masterpiece of Emotion
The tune is a “slow air,” characterized by its haunting, mournful melody that perfectly captures the sense of profound loss.
-
The Backstory: Niel Gow was already an elderly man and a celebrated musician when Margaret died. It is said that he was so overcome with grief that he didn’t pick up his fiddle for some time, eventually composing this piece as his final major work.
-
The Musicality: The melody is famous for its wide intervals and expressive leaps, which are often played with a delicate, “crying” quality. It is typically performed in the key of D Major, though it frequently touches on minor chords that enhance its somber tone.
-
The “Lament” Style: Unlike high-energy reels or jigs, this piece requires a great deal of “lift” and sustained notes, allowing the performer to infuse each phrase with individual feeling and dynamic variation.
