Notes

“Drowsy Maggie” is arguably one of the most recognizable and frequently played reels in the Irish traditional music canon. Despite its sleepy name, the tune is anything but—it is a fast-paced, high-energy reel usually played in the key of E Dorian.

The tune is famous for its distinctive A-part, which features a repetitive drone on the open E string, alternating with melodic notes. This creates a driving, hypnotic effect that is a favorite for session players and dancers alike. The B-part shifts into a more melodic, soaring phrase in D major, providing a bright contrast before returning to the gritty, rhythmic drive of the opening.

Because of its straightforward structure and visceral energy, it is often one of the first reels learned by fiddle students, yet it remains a staple for professional musicians. It is frequently paired in medleys with other classics like “Cooley’s Reel” or “The Glass of Beer.”
