Barrowburn Reel

“Barrowburn” is a beloved contemporary Scottish reel that has quickly earned its place as a “standard” in traditional sessions worldwide. Composed by the prolific Scottish accordionist Addie Harper (1924–2004), the tune is named after a farm in the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland.

Though written in the 20th century, it captures a timeless, “classic” Scottish feel with its driving rhythm and melodic leaps. It is almost always played in the key of D Major and is frequently paired with other popular session reels like “The High Drive” or “The High Reel.” Its bright, uplifting character makes it a favorite for both social dances and instrumental sets.
