“Le Rang du Pic Dur” is a spirited French Canadian reel that perfectly captures the rhythmic intensity of the Québécois tradition. The title refers to a specific “rang” (a rural road or row of farms) in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, an area famous for its deep roots in traditional music and percussive step-dancing.

Musically, the tune is often played in the key of D major (this sheet music transcription is by Lisa Ornstein in the key of G major) and is celebrated for its driving, repetitive motifs that create an almost hypnotic energy—ideal for long nights of dancing. It features the characteristic “crooked” (irregular meter) phrasing that is common in older French Canadian tunes, where an extra beat or half-measure might be tucked in to match the steps of a dancer or the natural phrasing of the fiddler. It is a favorite among proponents of the “Lanaudière style,” which emphasizes a strong, pulsing beat and a gritty, soulful approach to the melody.
