Notes
“Saint Anne’s Reel” is perhaps the most famous and widely played fiddle tune in all of North America. While it is a crown jewel of the French Canadian (Québécois) tradition—likely named after Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec—it has been wholeheartedly adopted into Irish, Bluegrass, and New England folk styles.
It is the quintessential “session starter,” known for its bright, welcoming melody and its incredibly satisfying harmonic structure.
-
The Melody: Set in D Major, the tune features a iconic “question and answer” phrasing. The A-part is regal and melodic, while the B-part provides a jubilant, climbing response that encourages every instrument in the room to join in.
-
The “Universal” Reel: Because it is so symmetrical and “square” (even phrasing), it is a favorite for contra dances and square dances. It manages to feel sophisticated enough for a concert stage, yet accessible enough for a beginner’s first jam session.
