Notes

“Harvest Home” (also known as the Cork Hornpipe) is one of the most celebrated hornpipes in the Irish and British traditional music repertoire. Its name evokes the festive celebrations following a successful agricultural season, and the music perfectly captures that sense of buoyant accomplishment.

Typically played in the key of D major, the tune is famous for its crisp, rhythmic character. As a hornpipe, it features a distinctive “dotted” or swung rhythm that gives it a sophisticated, strutting feel. The A-part is characterized by a bright, leaping melody that stays primarily in the middle register, while the B-part often utilizes a series of descending scale-like passages that provide a wonderful sense of resolution. It is a staple teaching tune because it encourages clean articulation and bow control, yet it remains a favorite for seasoned performers to showcase their subtle ornamentation and rhythmic “lift.”

Whether heard at a harvest festival or a quiet pub session, “Harvest Home” remains a timeless expression of joy and seasonal tradition.
