Notes

“The Reconciliation” is one of the most beloved reels in the Irish tradition, composed by the legendary 19th-century fiddler and collector Francie “The Weaver” Byrne of County Donegal. True to its name, the melody has a harmonious, balanced, and resolve-focused character. It is a session “standard” worldwide, often paired with tunes like “The Silver Spear” or “The Merry Blacksmith.”

As a reel in 4/4 time, it is celebrated for its elegance and the way it flows effortlessly between its two sections.

  • The Feel: It is incredibly “smooth.” While some reels are aggressive or “staccato,” “The Reconciliation” has a rolling, liquid quality. It feels less like a sprint and more like a comfortable, high-speed stroll through the countryside.

  • The Key: It is played in A Major, which provides a bright, open, and cheerful tonality. On the fiddle, this allows for beautiful use of the open E and A strings to create a resonant, ringing effect.

  • The Structure: The A-part stays primarily in the middle register, building a steady, rhythmic groove. The B-part features a distinctive “jump” to the high A on the E-string, creating a sense of joyous exclamation before the melody winds its way back down to a peaceful conclusion
