Notes

“Salt Spring” occupies a fascinating and beautiful space in modern acoustic music. While it is frequently heard at bluegrass, old-time, and fiddle jams—and often mistaken for a traditional, centuries-old piece—it is actually a contemporary composition. Written by the legendary mandolin master John Reischman in the early 2000s, it has quickly ascended into the “modern traditional” canon, becoming a universal favorite across the global string-band community.

The Bluegrass Situation+ 1

Reischman composed the tune while staying on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada, doodling on a vintage, small-body Martin guitar. Today, it stands as a brilliant example of how a newly written tune can capture an ancient, timeless soul.

Here is what makes “Salt Spring” such a magnetic and joyful piece:

The Rhythm and Groove

Played as a brisk, driving breakdown in D Major, the tune has a uniquely buoyant and cyclic rhythm.

  • The “Bum-Ditty” Feel: Reischman designed the melody to mimic the rolling, hypnotic rhythm of a clawhammer (frailing) banjo. Because of this right-hand pattern, the tune relies heavily on bouncing drone notes.

  • The Energy: It has a bright, sunny, and breezy momentum. It doesn’t feel rushed or aggressive; instead, it rolls forward with a wide-open, joyful swing that evokes the crisp coastal air of the Pacific Northwest.

Harmonic Warmth and Structure

What truly sets “Salt Spring” apart is its winsome, slightly pensive chord progression, which departs just enough from standard old-time structures to feel incredibly fresh.

  • The A-Part: Grounded in a classic D-Major feel, it features a clever drop into a minor chord (B minor) that injects a passing note of sweet nostalgia and longing before resolving right back into the sunshine.

  • The B-Part: Breaks out with a soaring, anthemic melody that builds immense momentum. It features a climbing, conversational call-and-response that practically begs other instruments to join in on the harmony.

A Modern Jam Anthem

“Salt Spring” has become a rite of passage for the new generation of acoustic picking circles. Part of its magic is its accessibility: the core melody is relatively simple and easy to catch onto by ear, making it the perfect “everyone play at once” tune at late-night festival jams. Yet, its intricate rhythmic patterns give virtuosos plenty of room to cut loose.

Whether featured on an all-star bluegrass record (like Reischman’s celebrated versions featuring Molly Tuttle and Alex Hargreaves) or passed around a campfire at 3:00 AM, “Salt Spring” is an absolute masterclass in tune-writing—a modern piece with deep traditional bones that instantly puts a smile on everyone’s face.
