“Mairi’s Wedding” (also known as The Lewis Bridal Song) is one of the most iconic and infectious Scottish songs in the traditional repertoire. While the melody feels like an ancient relic of the Highlands, it was actually composed in 1934 by Johnny Bannerman for Mary McNiven, a friend of his who won a gold medal at the National Mod . It has since become a global favorite, performed as a high-energy “march” or “hebridean” style song that is a staple at weddings, ceilidhs, and folk sessions.

As a 2/4 march, it is characterized by its bright, rhythmic “bounce” and a melody that is nearly impossible not to tap your feet to.

  • The Feel: It is pure celebration. The tune has a “pumping” rhythm that reflects the excitement of a community coming together for a wedding. It is intended to be played with a strong, percussive lift that drives the dancers forward .

  • The Key: Usually played in G Major, which gives it a sunny, open-string resonance on the fiddle and mandolin.

  • The Structure: The tune is built on a very simple, repetitive four-bar structure. This simplicity is its strength, as it allows the musicians to increase the tempo and intensity with each repetition, often leading to a roaring finale.

“Mairi’s Wedding” is a spirited celebration of a bride’s journey to her ceremony. The lyrics, often sung in a mix of English and Gaelic influences, reflect the vibrant community spirit of the Scottish Highlands.
