Notes

The “Happy Acres Two-Step” is a quintessential example of the “Messer-style” Canadian fiddle repertoire. It was composed by Cecil McEachern, a talented multi-instrumentalist from Prince Edward Island who was a longtime member of Don Messer’s famous band, The Islanders.

As a two-step, the tune is characterized by its jaunty, walking-pace rhythm and its incredibly cheerful, melodic structure. It typically modulates between the keys of D major and A major, providing a bright tonal shift that is a hallmark of the Maritime and Canadian Old-Time styles. Its infectious “bounce” makes it a favorite for dancers and fiddlers alike, often associated with community hall dances and kitchen sessions throughout Canada and the northeastern United States.

The tune remains a popular choice for those wanting to capture the lighthearted, communal energy of mid-century Canadian fiddling.
