“Merrily Kissed the Quaker” (often titled “Merrily Kiss the Quaker’s Wife”) is one of the most infectious and high-spirited tunes in the Irish tradition. While it is technically a single jig (in 12/8 time), it is most commonly played and celebrated as a slide—a rhythm particularly associated with the Sliabh Luachra region of Southwest Ireland.

The tune is a “standard” in the best sense of the word; it is a staple at sessions because its bright, leaping melody is instantly recognizable and nearly impossible to sit still to.

• The Feel: It is incredibly bouncy and “lifting.” The 12/8 time signature gives it a wider, more rolling feel than a standard 6/8 jig, making it feel like a series of joyous, galloping leaps.

• The Key: Almost always played in G Major, which allows the melody to ring out clearly on the strings and provides a sunny, open tonality.

• The Structure: Unlike many two-part tunes, this is a three-part tune (A, B, and C).

  • The A-Part: Sets the rhythmic hook with a repetitive, circular movement.

  • The B-Part: Introduces more melodic variation.

  • The C-Part: Often features the most “lift,” with the melody climbing slightly higher before descending back into the familiar “rolling” resolution.
