“The Old Favorite” (or The Old Favourite) is one of the most beloved and frequently played double jigs in the Irish traditional music repertoire. While it is often simply called a “common session tune,” its popularity stems from its incredibly catchy, cheerful melody and its “friendly” fingerings, which make it a favorite for beginners and seasoned masters alike.

Usually played in G Major, the tune is famous for:

  • The “Lonesome” A-part: It starts with a distinctive, falling melody that feels nostalgic yet bright.

  • The “Soaring” B-part: The second half of the tune jumps up to the higher register, giving it a triumphant, “open” feeling that is perfect for a lively dance floor.

  • The Club Ceili Connection: You might sometimes hear it called Club Ceili, as it was famously recorded under that name by the Tulla Céilí Band, cementing its status as a cornerstone of the ceili dance tradition in County Clare.
