Notes

“High Clouds” is a contemporary classic in the New England and French Canadian styles, composed by the influential fiddler and tune-smith David Kaynor. David was a pillar of the Massachusetts folk scene, and “High Clouds” perfectly encapsulates his ability to write melodies that feel as if they have existed for centuries. It has become a favorite at contra dances and jam sessions because of its soaring, optimistic character.

The tune is a breakdown or reel that feels remarkably spacious, living up to its name by evoking the image of white clouds drifting across a wide blue sky.

  • The Feel: It has a “lofty” and elegant quality. While many reels are driving and “earthy,” “High Clouds” has a lightness and a sense of “lift” that makes it feel almost weightless.

  • The Key: Usually played in G Major, it utilizes the high register of the fiddle to create its signature “airy” sound. It is a very resonant tune that lets the instrument “ring” naturally.

  • The Melody: The A-part features beautiful, arpeggiated climbs that mimic the rising of the wind, while the B-part often stays in a higher register, providing a bright, shimmering contrast before gently descending.
