Notes
“Reel des Oignons” (The Onion Reel) is a classic of the French Canadian repertoire and one of the most beloved tunes in the Quebecois tradition. Composed by the legendary accordionist Philippe Bruneau, it has become a “must-know” tune for anyone interested in the high-energy, percussive style of Northern folk music. It is a tune that sounds exactly like its name implies—earthy, humble, and full of flavor.
As a reel in 2/4 or 4/4 time, it is defined by its relentless forward momentum and its “circular” melodic patterns.
-
The Feel: It has a fantastic “swing” to it. In the Quebecois tradition, reels aren’t played perfectly “straight”; they have a slight lilt that makes them incredibly danceable. “Reel des Oignons” is famous for its “noodly” melody that seems to spiral around itself, much like the layers of an onion.
-
The Key: Usually played in G Major, it is bright and highly resonant. The melody relies on short, repeating phrases and “turn” figures that require nimble fingers and a very rhythmic bow (or accordion bellows).
-
The Character: This is “kitchen music” at its finest. It isn’t meant for a formal stage; it’s meant for a crowded room with wooden floors, heavy boots, and plenty of podorythmie (seated foot-tapping).
