Notes
“Red Wing” is a classic American popular song from 1907 that quickly transitioned into the traditional folk and “Old-Time” repertoire. Composed by Kerry Mills with lyrics by Thurland Chattaway, the melody is famously adapted from Robert Schumann’s piano piece, “The Happy Farmer”.
In the world of folk music, it is played as a bright, jaunty reel or polka in the Key of G Major. It is a favorite at jam sessions due to its cheerful, straightforward melody and its “Western Swing” potential. For mandolin and fiddle players, it offers a great opportunity to practice syncopated rhythms and clean double-stops. Its enduring popularity in New England and Mid-Atlantic sessions makes it a “must-know” tune for any community songbook.
