“The Night Bird” is known for its bright, rolling feel. The melody has a lovely upward lift in the A-part, and like many of Doug’s compositions, it feels “instantaneously traditional.” It’s a favorite at the Maine Fiddle Camp because it’s approachable for intermediate players but offers plenty of room for seasoned fiddlers to add the crisp ornamentation and rhythmic “pokes” that define the Maine style.
