Notes

The “French Reel” is a cornerstone of the North American fiddle tradition, representing the historical meeting point between French Canadian, Acadian, and New England folk styles. While its roots can be traced back to the French quadrilles, it became a standard in the repertoire of legendary fiddlers like Don Messer, who helped solidify its popularity across Canada and the United States.

The tune is a bright and courtly reel in the key of D major. It is easily recognized by its distinctive A-part, which features a series of ascending melodic leaps that give the tune a buoyant, celebratory feel. The B-part offers a pleasant, descending contrast that makes it particularly satisfying to play for dancers. Because of its steady, driving rhythm and clear phrasing, it is often one of the first French-style tunes learned by fiddlers, yet its elegant structure keeps it a favorite for seasoned professionals.

Whether heard at a lively kitchen session in Quebec or a community dance in New England, the “French Reel” remains a timeless testament to the enduring influence of French-style fiddling on the folk traditions of the continent.
