Notes

“Meron Nign” (also known as a “Tune from Meron”) is a joyous and spiritually uplifting melody from the Klezmer tradition. A nign (or nigun) is a form of Jewish religious song or tune that is often sung without lyrics, intended to elevate the soul through repetitive, soulful phrasing.

The title refers to Mount Meron in Israel, a site of significant pilgrimage during the festival of Lag BaOmer. The music reflects the ecstatic energy of these celebrations. Typically played as a freylekh (a lively dance tune in 2/4 time), “Meron Nign” is characterized by its infectious, rhythmic pulse and a melody that often moves between a sense of deep longing and exuberant celebration. It is a staple for klezmer ensembles, featuring prominent roles for the fiddle and clarinet, which mimic the expressive, “vocal” qualities of human singing through slides and ornamentation.
