“Mitton’s Breakdown” (often referred to as Earl Mitton’s Breakdown) is a cornerstone of the Canadian “Down East” fiddling tradition. Composed by the legendary New Brunswick fiddler Earl Mitton in the 1950s, it is a quintessential “Bb Breakdown”—a tune specifically written in the key of Major.
While many traditional tunes live in the “easy” fiddle keys of G, D, and A, is a more challenging and sophisticated key for fiddlers, requiring precise finger placement and a different resonant quality. “Mitton’s Breakdown” is celebrated for its:
-
Technical Sparkle: It features clean, arpeggiated runs and a bright, crisp melody that makes it a favorite for “trick” fiddling or competitions.
-
Down East Style: It perfectly captures the smooth, rhythmic, and highly polished style popularized by Earl Mitton and his band, The Valley Rhythm Boys.
-
Harmonic Richness: Because it is in , it has a “horn-like” brilliance that sets it apart from the grittier, more open-string-heavy sound of reels in other keys.
