Notes
“Silver and Gold Two-Step” is a classic of the Canadian and North American “Old-Time” fiddle repertoire. It is a bright, bouncy, and inherently social tune that perfectly captures the “Two-Step” rhythm—a dance feel that is slightly more “polka-like” and driving than a standard reel.
While its exact origins are often debated, it is a staple in the Canadian “Down East” style and is frequently associated with legendary fiddlers like Don Messer.
-
The Feel: The “Two-Step” is all about the “oom-pah” rhythm. It has a distinctive “lift” that makes it feel like it’s skipping along, rather than the straight-ahead drive of a reel.
-
The Key: It is almost always played in G Major, which gives it a cheery, open-string brilliance on the fiddle and mandolin.
-
The Melody: The tune is characterized by its playful, arpeggiated A-part and a rhythmic, “stumping” B-part that usually encourages some enthusiastic foot-tapping from the performers.
