Notes

“Steciak’s” is a contemporary masterpiece of the New England contra dance repertoire, composed by the prolific and influential musician Larry Unger. While written in modern times, it has the timeless feel of an ancient traditional tune, quickly becoming a staple in sessions and dances across the Northeast.

Named after a friend of the composer, the tune is a high-energy reel that bridges the gap between the driving rhythms of Bluegrass and the melodic intricacy of the “Down East” style.

  • The Key: It is typically played in G minor, giving it a bright and accessible resonance for fiddles and mandolins.

  • The Structure: It features a distinctive A-part with a “galloping” feel and a B-part that moves into a slightly more melodic, soaring register.

  • The “Unger” Touch: Larry Unger is known for writing tunes that are incredibly “player-friendly”—they sit well on the fingers but offer enough rhythmic complexity to keep a room full of dancers moving with purpose.
