Notes
“Tommy’s Tarbukas” is a contemporary masterpiece of the “New Celtic” tradition, composed by the virtuosic Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser. While relatively modern, it has achieved legendary status in sessions worldwide, particularly in the New England and Scottish scenes.
The tune is named after a “tarbuka” (or darbuka), a goblet-shaped drum used in Middle Eastern music. This name is a nod to the tune’s unique, driving rhythm and its slightly “exotic” melodic flavor.
-
The Scale: Set in B Minor, the tune uses a “modal” sound that feels both ancient and modern. It avoids the happy, bright resolution of a major key, opting instead for a gritty, driving intensity.
-
The Rhythm: The B-part is famous for its syncopated, percussive “licks” that mimic the sharp hits of a hand drum. It has a relentless forward momentum that makes it a “peak” tune in any set.
