Notes

“April Waltz” is a contemporary treasure of the North American fiddle tradition, composed by the renowned Canadian fiddler Selmer Helgeland. While it was written in the mid-20th century, it has the timeless, elegant quality of a long-standing traditional standard, becoming a “must-know” for fiddlers in the “Down East” and Midwestern Old-Time styles.

As the name suggests, the tune captures the essence of early spring—delicate, optimistic, and flowing.

  • The Feel: It is a classic 3/4 waltz with a gentle, rolling rhythm. It isn’t meant to be played as a fast “Viennese” waltz; instead, it shines at a medium tempo that allows the lyrical melody to breathe.

  • The Key: Typically played in G Major, it has a bright, open sound that feels very “natural” on the fiddle, often utilizing lovely double-stops (playing two strings at once) to create a lush, harmonic texture.

  • The Melody: The tune is famous for its long, graceful phrases and a B-part that feels like it’s “blooming,” climbing into the higher register before settling back into a peaceful resolution.
