Notes

“The Bus Stop Reel” is a modern classic in the contra dance and Celtic traditions. It was composed by the talented flute player and fiddler Anita Anderson in the 1980s. Despite its relatively recent origin, it has achieved “traditional” status, becoming a staple at sessions and dances across North America and the UK.

The tune is famous for its minor-key “groove” and a melody that feels like it’s constantly spinning forward.

  • The Key: It is played in A Minor (specifically A Dorian), which gives it a slightly edgy, “cool” sound compared to the more common major-key reels.

  • The Feel: It is a high-energy, driving reel. The A-part features a repetitive, rhythmic motif that builds tension, while the B-part opens up with a soaring, melodic line that feels like a “payoff” for the dancers.

  • The Name: The title famously comes from the fact that the tune was composed while Anita was waiting at a bus stop—a perfect example of how everyday moments can turn into enduring pieces of folk art.
