“Haste to the Wedding” is one of the most beloved and recognizable jigs in the entire Celtic world. While its roots are firmly planted in 18th-century Ireland—where it was popularized in the 1767 pantomime The Elopement—it has since become a cornerstone of the Scottish, English, and American contra dance traditions. As its name suggests, the tune is the embodiment of joyful urgency and celebration.

As a 12/8 or 6/8 jig, it has a relentless, rolling energy that makes it a perfect “walking out” or “processional” tune for weddings and social gatherings.

  • The Feel: It is characterized by a “bouncy” and light-hearted rhythm. It isn’t a heavy, driving tune; rather, it has a “skipping” quality that mimics the excitement of a wedding party rushing toward the ceremony.

  • The Key: Usually played in D Major, it is exceptionally bright and resonant. On the fiddle, it makes great use of the open strings, allowing the melody to ring out clearly even in a crowded, noisy hall.

  • The Melody: The A-part is grounding and features a signature rhythmic “hook” that repeats, while the B-part leaps up an octave, providing a celebratory “shout” before spiraling back down to the home key.
