Notes
“The Merry Blacksmith” (also known as Paddy on the Railroad) is a quintessential “session” reel that is known and loved by traditional musicians from Ireland to the Appalachian mountains. It is a tune of pure, unadulterated joy and forward momentum, perfectly mimicking the rhythmic, metallic “clink” and steady pulse of a blacksmith at his anvil.
As a 4/4 reel in D Major, it is one of the most accessible and “satisfying” tunes to play because of its bright, resonant character and its logical, rolling melodic lines.
-
The Feel: It is incredibly sturdy and optimistic. It doesn’t have the “shadows” or “mist” of some older airs; it is a “sunny day” tune. It is often played at a brisk tempo, where the notes “bounce” off the strings with a rhythmic snap.
-
The Key: Played in D Major, it takes full advantage of the fiddle’s most resonant open strings. This gives the tune a “big” sound that carries exceptionally well in a crowded room or a noisy dance hall.
-
The Structure:
-
The A-Part: Features a series of descending and ascending runs that feel like a wheel turning. It establishes a strong, percussive foundation.
-
The B-Part: Provides a wonderful melodic “lift,” jumping into the higher register of the A and E strings. This part feels like a celebratory response to the steady “work” of the A-part.
