Notes
“November Waltz” is a contemporary masterpiece in the New England traditional style, composed by the influential fiddler and community leader Selena Coles. It has quickly become a modern “standard” in the contra dance and folk community, often played as the final waltz of an evening to bring a dance to a graceful, slightly bittersweet close.
True to its name, the tune perfectly captures the atmosphere of late autumn—the air is crisp, the light is fading, and there is a sense of both stillness and transition.
-
The Feel: It is deeply elegant and nostalgic. While many waltzes are “bouncy” and meant for a fast whirl, “November Waltz” is typically played with a smooth, flowing “long-bow” style that emphasizes its lyrical, singing quality.
-
The Key: Usually played in F Major or G Major. In G Major, it has a warm, resonant clarity that feels very grounded and comforting.
-
The Melody: The tune is famous for its wide melodic intervals and “reaching” phrases. It feels as though the melody is sighing or looking back over its shoulder, moving with a gentle, breathing rhythm that matches the natural rise and fall of a dance.
