Tune Description: “Indian Point”

“Indian Point” is a contemporary folk classic that has quickly earned a permanent spot in traditional Irish and New England sessions. Written by the American fiddler and contra-dance caller Rick Mohr, the tune is a driving, atmospheric jig in E Minor.

The name and inspiration come from a dramatic, rocky point in Georgetown, Maine—a location very familiar to the Midcoast community. Mohr composed the piece after spending a beautiful spring day there with fellow musicians. The tune is celebrated for its haunting melody and its versatility; it is often paired with “Lannigan’s Ball” or “The Tenpenny Bit” to create a high-energy set of jigs. Despite its modern roots, its modal sound gives it an “ancient” feel that resonates perfectly with traditional fiddle and mandolin styles.
