Notes
“The Devil’s Dream” is one of the oldest and most widely recognized reels in the English-speaking world, appearing in collections as far back as the late 18th century. Known in Scotland as “De’il Amang the Tailors,” the tune crossed the Atlantic and became a definitive piece in North American old-time and bluegrass traditions.
The tune is a high-energy reel in A major, famous for its relentless, driving eighth-note patterns that require significant bow control and finger dexterity. Its name stems from folklore common in the fiddle tradition, where difficult or particularly “wicked” sounding tunes were often attributed to supernatural origins. In a session or dance setting, it is often used as a technical showcase, with its soaring melodic leaps and rapid-fire string crossings creating a truly exhilarating atmosphere.
Because of its long history, “The Devil’s Dream” has evolved into many variations across the British Isles, Canada, and the United States, yet it always retains its signature spirited character.
